What is 5g technology?

5g is the fifth generation cell phone/mobile technology. It is the new global wireless technology introduced after 4g. 5g permits a new network and its design allow us to connect virtually including machines, devices etc.

5g provides advancement and much better than all the previous generations. It provides reliability, ultra high speed (20 Gbps), low latency (1 ms) and smooth experience to all the users. The biggest advantage of this technology is it has a huge network capacity and faster performance. It helps to improve new user experiences, efficiency and faster data processing.

All the previous generations focus on connectivity only whereas 5g takes the connectivity to the next level by providing connectivity from cloud to client. 5g comes with wi-fi 6 technology that improves performance. Wifi-6 radio helps the users to provide geographical coverage and lower costs also.

This technology also improves connectivity in backward areas which cannot be fulfilled by 4g technology.

How does 5g technology Work?

4g Wireless technology is the foundation for 5g. As in 4g, they require strong power towers to beam signals over long distances. 5g signals will transmit through small cell sites. Uses of small cell sites are necessary because the spectrum band can travel over short distances. It helps to protect the signals from weather and physical hindrances.

Earlier technology uses lower-frequency bands of spectrum. To overcome the problems relating to interference with millimetre Wave and distance the wireless companies moving towards the use of lower frequency spectrum for 5g technology. The low-frequency spectrum can cover long distances but the problem is it has a lower speed.

The low-frequency spectrum is made up of low band frequencies and mid-band frequencies. Low band frequencies act around 700 megahertz (MHz), whereas mid-band frequencies operate around 3.5 GHz.

Millimetre-wave signals can halt by physical objects like trees, buildings etc. which means that it can cover about a city block within in direct line of sight. There are several methods but one of the methods involve using multiple nodes around each block where there is too much population so that a 5g device can use air interface.

This technology also introduces 5g new Radio, the universal standard fog 5g air interface. There are new antennas that will enable the sender and receiver to transmit more data at the same time. This technology also supports different networks. Its network architecture is based on software and provides flexibility as well. This technology also creates network slices which enable network admin to command network functionality. 5g also strengthen digital experiences.

It is based on some networking principles. It is not only faster but provides better broadband services which are not provided by previous generations.

How fast is 5g?

It is very fast compared to all the previous generations.

3g network has sped up to 3.1 megabits per second.

4g network has around 100 Mbps. It is 20 times faster than 3g.

Whereas 5g offers up to 20 Gigabits per second. Its design helps us to provide more network capacity. It delivers lower latency as 1 ms for faster response and provides an overall wonderful user experience.

Its download speed can reach up to from 1 Mbps to 2 Gbps. To envision this, you can watch a 4k video on YouTube without buffering it. You can watch the web series on Amazon Prime, Hotstar and Netflix and you can also download videos from there is just a few seconds.

The download speed of the 5G low band is 20Mpbs to 250Mpbs and it is expected to be used more in rural areas. The download speed of 5G mid-band is 100 to 800Mbps and is expected to be used more in urban areas. With the optimize use of bandwidth, the maximum amount of data can be sent with just a few errors.

This technology can support many devices than LTE.

Benefits of 5g

From above all, it is clear with the evolution of this technology there will be a great impact on industries. There are some worthy benefits such as:

  • Low latency of 1ms
  • High Bandwidth
  • Usage of higher frequencies
  • Higher Data rates

Difference between 5G vs. 4G

Every mobile generation is not limited by just its data rates, but there is a break in encoding methods which enables users to update their hardware.

4G can support up to 2Gbps which is 50 times faster than 3g. 5G breaks all the records of data rates as it is 500 times faster than 4G. There is a difference in the level of latency which 4g is 50ms and 5g is 1ms which is very low as compared to 4G.

It can support more than 100 times increase in network efficiency and traffic than 4g.

It is more capable than 4G as it is has a consolidated platform.

As we all know that 4g has provided faster data rates than 3g. It is designed to be consolidated as it not only provides faster broadband services but also support new services such as massive IoT (Internet of Things) and supports all type of spectrum like licensed, unlicensed and shared. Also supports all types of bands such as low, high and mid bands and deployment models such as macrocells and provides a new way to interconnect such as a device to device. It uses the spectrum better than 4g.

5G is also based on OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) as 4G does. Whereas 4G uses only 20 MHz channels and 5G will use 100 MHz to 700 MHz channels.

There is low power consumption which allows devices to run continuously for weeks without human support.

It is definitely going to change the vision of the world.

Things which 5G Technology can perform:

Boosts up Broadband

In some metro cities, there are some areas in which users are facing a problem of slow bandwidth during peak hours. This not only limited to metro cities but rural areas are also facing problems more than metro cities. 5G will go to sort out this by adding more amount of spectrum in bands.

Independent vehicles

We can see autonomous vehicles when 5g spreads across the world in the future. These vehicles will communicate with other vehicles on the road; provide information about road conditions to other vehicles etc.

 Remote Control

As 5G has low latency, we expect that we can control the device remotely. Our main aim is to reduce risk in a perilous environment. It will help the technicians to control the device from anywhere in the world.

Health Care

The Ultra-reliable low latency Communication of 5g can change health care. We expect that we can see remote surgery, remote recovery, and improvements in telemedicine in upcoming years.

Public Infrastructure

5G allows cities and govt. to function more efficiently. Service provides can easily track usage remotely. Sensors alert govt. departments when street lights go out or any unnatural happens.
