What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

Internet of things is used to characterize objects that communicate with each other. It is made up of different devices like sensors to smartphones and wearable- linked together. It is a huge network of people and connected things.

When we associate these devices with computerized systems, it is probable for us to collect the information and analyse it. We can set up an action and help someone with a particular task. IoT is all about network, devices and data. Internet of things allows different devices to interact with each other on private internet connections. It brings those connected networks together as well. It’s a freedom for all the devices to communicate not only within your close devices but also different networking types.

We know that the Internet is a boon for all of us. There was a time when we all uses a cell phone. We use that for call and message only. But now smartphone dominates. We can watch movies, play games, there is a lot we can do with our Smartphone.

There are numerous objects in different shapes and sizes. For example- microwave ovens which cook automatically and deliver food at the right time. Self-driving cars whose sensors can detect any physical objects on their way. Also, fitness devices like smart bands which measure our heart rate and footsteps that we have taken that particular day.

Many companies are using IoT to function efficiently. As it enables the corporate to understand the customer in a better way. Accordingly, they provide services to them. It helps them in decision making which consequently raises the goodwill of the company.

How does the Internet of Things (IoT) works?

IoT environment comprises of internetworking smart devices which use systems such as hardware, processors and sensors to collect and send data. Afterwards, perform analysis on acquired data. Then the IoT device shares the sensor data through the IoT gateway where data is sent to the cloud for analysis. These devices communicate with similar devices occasionally and take action on the information they get from each other. These devices do not require human interference and can do most of the work without human. But a human can interact with the devices if they want to give instructions to them or access the data.

The networking and communication protocols which are using with internet-enabled devices rely on particular IoT applications.

IoT can also use AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning to make the data collection process more accessible and vigorous.

For Example Internet of Things in House.

Suppose every day you wake up at 8 am to go to your job. Your alarm clock alarms at the right time you want. But suddenly something happened and your company’s cab not arrived yet. Then you decide to go by train. The problem is that it takes a longer time to reach the office. And in this condition, you have to wake at 7 am to avoid being late. IoT devices can overcome this problem. IoT enabled alarm clock would reset itself based on all these circumstances and ensures you wake up and reach on time. It recognizes your company’s cab is not coming. If you opt a different way to go to the office it calculates the travel time. It also determines when it needs to wake you up so you are not late.

Importance of Internet of Things (IoT)?

The Internet of Things (IoT) completely changes the lifestyle of people and gain complete access over their lives. It offers intelligent devices to automate house activities. IoT is also important for the business. It provides business to figure out how the systems work, helps in a deep understanding of everything from the performance of machines to logistics operations.

It enables organizations to automate most of the processes which further reduces labour costs and maximize the returns. IoT improves service distribution and reduces expenditure on production and delivering of goods. It also provides transparency into customer’s account.

It helps in proper utilization of resources, minimizes human intervention. IoT enables the analytics to make an immediate decision, promotes real-time marketing of products and provides a high quality of data.

Advantages of IoT

  • The IoT assures us to convert a wide range of fields. For example, in hospitals, the IoT enabled devices to help the doctors to monitor the patients from inside and outside of hospital premises. Systems can assess the data which help the interns to adjust treatments and improves the patient’s result.
  • IoT can enhance urban cities as well. When sensors or detectors are installed on busy roads can help the govt. and officials. They can alert the drivers about delays and mishappenings. Meanwhile, smart dustbins can notify whey they become full, which helps in optimizing waste collection routes.
  • With the use of smart devices can provide benefits to business that strategically uses them. For example, by tracking the business data about inventory levels helps in reducing costs. It also helps the companies to understand the consumers easily.
  • By understanding the consumer’s needs and behaviours in the store, the producer produces products that increase its turnover. When the product says IoT enabled (water purifier) is a consumer’s home, it can alert the owner of upcoming service schedules like (candle changes or requires repair etc). It also alerts the owner if there is any appointment schedule.

The IoT also provides benefits to organizations. These are:

  • Saves money and time.
  • It increases employees’ productivity.
  • Helps in making a better business decision.
  • It monitors the complete business process.
  • It helps in generating more profits.

IoT stimulates the organizations to redefine the methods they use in their business and give them proper tools to reform their strategies.

IoT can be a boon to farmers. It makes their farming much easier. As sensors collect data about humidity, rainfall, temperature and other important factors. It helps the farmers to automate farming methods.

IoT is ample in the transportation and manufacturing industries as well.

It can be used to monitor the infrastructure process of the business. For example, the sensor can monitor the operations or changes within bridges, structural buildings etc. Consequently, it saves time, cost and improves workflow.

The business such as home automation can make use of IoT to supervise and control electrical and mechanical systems in a building. It helps the citizens to minimize energy consumption.

Nowadays, IoT enters in every industry like healthcare, finance and manufacturing etc.

Disadvantages of Internet of Things (IoT)

  • It’s challenging for devices from distinct producers to communicate with each other as there are no standards of compatibility for IoT.
  • If there is any virus in the central device, every device that connects to it may be infected.
  • It’s quite challenging for the organizations to collect and manage the data from IoT devices which connects to it (if they are massive numbers).
  • More information can be shared as IoT devices increases. It may be easier for the hacker to steal confidential information.

What are the Internet of Things (IoT) Applications?

Internet of Things (IoT) applications can scrutinize and present sensor facts and stats to business users through dashboards.

IoT applications use ML (machine learning) algorithms to scrutinize a huge amount of sensor data in the cloud. Business users can find out the performance, facts and figures and other information by using IoT dashboards and alerts.

Business users can strengthen the current process of supply chains, financial services etc. with the help of cloud-based IoT applications.

In an urban city IoT enabled devices such as streetlights and meters etc. helps in minimizing the traffic, discover environmental issues, improves hygiene and saves energy.

IoT based farming is beneficial for farmers. As it monitors, temperature, light and humidity using sensors. It is also beneficial in automating irrigation systems.

Installing IoT devices in buildings is a plus point for everyone. It helps in detecting the occupants in a room which consequently reduces energy costs using sensors. This can also adjust the temperature automatically. For example, turn on the AC if the sensor detects the room is full or off the AC when it detects no one in the room.

IoT provides many benefits to medical departments as well. It helps to monitor the patients and treats them based on data that it generates. It helps the pharmacy and medical equipment departments to manage inventories using IoT systems.

The sensor on wearable devices like smartwatches can scrutinize and collect the user’s data. It aims to make user life more comfortable and easier. It also ensures the safety of the public. For example, tracing construction workers critical signs at life hazardous spot.

To make a smart house, we need IoT enabled devices like smart appliances, thermostats and lightning and electronic gadgets. We can control all these devices through computers or smartphones.
